Universal Pictures has addressed the widespread rumours about a pay disparity between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the film adaptation of the Broadway hit “Wicked,” which has grossed over $5 billion.

Online speculation suggested that Grande, who played Glinda, received $15 million, significantly more than Erivo, who played Elphaba, who reportedly earned $1 million.

A spokesperson from Universal firmly denied these rumours, stating, “Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder. Both women received equal pay for their work on Wicked.” The studio, however, did not reveal specific salary details.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were paid the same salary for their work on Wicked.

This clarification comes amidst heated online discussions, with one post about the rumoured pay gap attracting over 11 million views and 120,000 likes on social media platform X.

The debate included criticisms of the alleged unfair pay distribution, especially given Erivo’s central role. Some called the disparity “diabolical” and “unfair.” Others argued that Grande’s larger fan base justified a higher salary, suggesting her potential to attract more viewers to theatres.

Leaked salary information also indicated payments to other cast members, with Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum reportedly receiving $2 million. In comparison, Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater were said to earn $450,000 and $350,000, respectively.

Despite the controversy, “Wicked” has been a box office success, earning $112.5 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and a global debut of $162.5 million. The film’s worldwide gross has reached approximately $180 million, with projections of continued strong performance through the Thanksgiving weekend.
