TEHRAN, Iran: Iran’s maritime agreement with Oman does not mean a Strait of Hormuz reopening, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday, setting out Tehran’s position ahead of regional talks in Muscat.

Araghchi told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the new maritime route “does not in any way mean reopening” the strategic waterway.

He said Iran would brief participating countries on the agreement with Oman during a meeting in Muscat on Monday. Tehran also plans to present maps showing the proposed maritime corridor.

Araghchi said Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz only if the United States returned to its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum. The supplied material does not provide further details on those commitments.

The foreign minister also said Tehran believed regional countries should be responsible for their own security and stability. He said the Oman meeting would create a basis for further regional consultations.
