President Donald Trump was safely evacuated after a Trump WHCA dinner shooting incident disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, April 25, 2026.
The incident triggered a rapid Secret Service response as Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and senior officials were moved to safety. No protected officials were reported injured, according to early reports. The Associated Press reported that Trump was uninjured and evacuated after a shooting incident outside the annual dinner.
The shooting incident occurred near the security screening area outside the event, causing panic among guests inside the ballroom. Attendees reportedly ducked for cover as security personnel moved quickly to secure the venue. Trump later said a suspect had been apprehended and praised the Secret Service and law enforcement response. Reports said the dinner was cancelled for the night after the security scare.
The Washington Hilton carries added historical significance because it was also the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan.
Early reporting said a Secret Service agent was struck but avoided injury due to protective gear. Authorities continued investigating the suspect’s motive and the full sequence of events. Officials have not publicly confirmed any direct link between the shooting and the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict. Trump also said, based on available information, he did not believe the incident was connected to Iran. However, he added that his actions toward Tehran may have made him a target.
Trump Says Incident Will Not Deter Iran War Strategy
Speaking after the evacuation, Trump said the shooting would not change his approach to the conflict with Iran. He said he remained committed to “winning the war in Iran,” while arguing that strong U.S. action could make him a political or security target. The remarks came during a tense period in U.S.-Iran diplomacy, as talks involving Pakistan appeared to face new uncertainty.
Earlier on Saturday, Trump cancelled a planned trip by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan for Iran-related talks. CBS News reported that Trump said the trip was unnecessary because the U.S. “has all the cards,” adding that Iran could contact Washington directly.

Al Jazeera also reported that the cancelled Islamabad visit raised doubts over the latest round of negotiations, which had been expected to involve Pakistan’s mediation role. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had reportedly already left Islamabad after meetings with Pakistani officials.
The shooting at the WHCA dinner has added another layer of tension to an already volatile moment in Washington. For Trump, the incident comes after previous security threats during and after his 2024 campaign. For U.S. officials, it also comes as the administration faces pressure over both domestic security and its handling of the Iran conflict. Investigators are expected to release more details as the case develops.
