US President Donald Trump is reportedly frustrated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the Gaza conflict, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on September 17, 2025. Trump believes the prolonged military campaign undermines his efforts to secure a ceasefire. The disagreement shows rising tensions in the US-Israel alliance during the ongoing fighting.

Trump sees Netanyahu’s actions as blocking progress at the negotiating table. His frustration grew after Israel launched a strike in Qatar on September 9, 2025, targeting Hamas negotiators. The move disrupted talks and drew Trump’s private disapproval. Still, he has held back from criticising Netanyahu in public. Instead, Trump highlights his role in the Abraham Accords while keeping the working partnership intact.

Netanyahu is pressing ahead with a major offensive in Gaza City, aiming to force Hamas into surrender. This approach clashes with Trump’s preference for a deal through negotiations. During a recent visit, Secretary of State Marco Rubio focused on arranging hostage releases but avoided confronting Netanyahu. This reflects Washington’s cautious stance.

Analysts believe Trump’s hesitation is shaped by politics. Netanyahu enjoys firm support from Republicans and conservative media in the US. Symbolic gestures, such as naming a seaside promenade after Trump, also help maintain goodwill between the two leaders. Some former diplomats think Trump’s frustration may be short-lived, giving him room to claim credit if Israel’s operations show results later.

The growing gap between Washington and Tel Aviv carries serious consequences. Ceasefire chances and hostage talks remain uncertain as Trump’s diplomatic push runs into Netanyahu’s military-driven strategy. The rift adds strain to the US-Israel alliance at a time when the Gaza humanitarian crisis is under intense global scrutiny.
