On April 19, 2025, thousands of protesters rallied in New York, Washington, D.C., and other U.S. cities, marking a second wave of major demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration policies and broader agenda.
Organised by the 50501 movement, the protests, reported by AFP and The New York Times, targeted Trump’s mass deportation efforts, threats to constitutional norms, and cuts to scientific and health programs, with demonstrators demanding non-violent resistance to what they call authoritarian overreach.
In New York, protesters gathered outside the main library, wielding signs with slogans like “No Kings in America” and chanting “No ICE, no fear, immigrants are welcome here,” decrying the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency’s role in deportations.

In Washington, D.C., demonstrators like Benjamin Douglas, 41, voiced alarm over eroded due process, citing the arrest of pro-Palestinian student Mahmoud Khalil as a “test case” to fuel xenophobia. As The New York Times noted, Khalil’s detention, linked to Columbia University protests, has sparked free speech concerns.
The Trump administration’s aggressive immigration measures, including 538 detentions in January 2025 raids across cities like New York and Atlanta, have fueled public outrage. A CNN report highlighted fears among noncitizens, with organisers like Domingo Garcia noting reduced turnout at a Dallas march due to deportation anxieties. Over 700 immigration-related protests have occurred in 2025, per the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data, reflecting sustained resistance.
Broader Concerns: Science, Health, and Democracy
Protesters also targeted Trump’s health and science policies, particularly the influence of vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health chief. Daniella Butler, a 26-year-old PhD student, protested in D.C. with a Texas map marked for measles outbreaks, warning, “When science is ignored, people die.” Kathy Valy, a 73-year-old New Yorker, compared Trump’s tactics to Nazi-era authoritarianism, calling him a “stupid” yet dangerous figure manipulated by his team.

In Galveston, Texas, writer Patsy Oliver, 63, joined a small anti-Trump rally, emphasising urgency: “We cannot wait for the next election.” San Francisco saw hundreds spell out “IMPEACH + REMOVE” on a beach, with some displaying an upside-down U.S. flag, a distress signal, as the San Francisco Chronicle reported. These actions reflect discontent with Trump’s cuts to agencies, pressure on universities, and immigration registry rules effective April 11, 2025.
The 50501 group, symbolising 50 protests across 50 states, organised around 400 demonstrations, aiming for millions but seeing smaller crowds than the April 5 “Hands Off” protests, which drew over 250,000 nationwide, per Al Jazeera.

The group’s website calls for non-violent resistance to Trump’s “anti-democratic” actions, including mass deportations and Project 2025, a conservative plan to overhaul federal agencies.
