Washington: The Texas GOP runoff split Senate Republicans after President Donald Trump endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn ahead of the May 26 vote.
Cornyn had sought Trump’s backing for months. However, Trump chose Paxton, calling him a loyal “MAGA Warrior,” according to the Associated Press.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he would keep supporting Cornyn. He called the Texas Republican a “principled conservative” and an effective senator.
Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota said many Republicans were disappointed. Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska warned that Trump’s move could put the seat at risk.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats now see a stronger chance in Texas. The Democratic nominee is state lawmaker James Talarico.
Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said Paxton could still win. Still, he said the race may cost Republicans “three times more.”

The runoff follows a March primary in which no Republican won a majority. AP said Trump’s endorsement gives Paxton a major boost before Election Day.
The Texas GOP runoff has also revived debate over party loyalty. Trump said Cornyn had not supported him when “times were tough.”
