Washington: Republican US Senator Bill Cassidy lost his Louisiana primary on May 16, as Julia Letlow and John Fleming advanced to a June 27 runoff.
The Associated Press reported that Trump-backed Letlow led Fleming 45.2% to 28.3% with 98% of votes counted. Cassidy finished third.
Cassidy drew Trump’s anger after voting to convict him in his 2021 impeachment trial. Trump later praised Letlow and called Cassidy’s political career “over.”
Letlow thanked Louisiana voters on X and said the state wanted conservative leadership aligned with Trump. Cassidy, however, thanked voters for allowing him to serve Louisiana for 12 years.

The runoff winner will face Democrat Jamie Davis in November. Independent analysts rate Louisiana as solidly Republican.
Cassidy became the first elected US senator to lose renomination since Republican Richard Lugar in 2012.
