Tom Cruise’s appearance at the 2024 Olympic Games closing ceremony in Paris ignited cosmetic surgery rumours.
Many observers noted Tom Cruise’s noticeably altered facial features, describing them as “puffy” a common sign of plastic surgery interventions. Dr. Kshem Yapa, a seasoned plastic surgeon, offered professional insights into the discussions surrounding Cruise, who is 62.
Dr. Yapa elaborated on the primary purposes of a facelift, which include addressing skin laxity and replenishing lost facial volume. “As we age, our skin tends to sag, and we lose volume, especially around the temples and mid-face, which can result in a more hollowed appearance,” he explained.
In a facelift procedure, sagging facial tissues are repositioned to their more youthful alignments. Fat, usually extracted from the patient’s stomach, fills in areas that have lost volume, restoring a fuller, more youthful facial contour.
Despite the potential benefits, Dr. Yapa stressed the associated risks. Fat relocated from another body part retains its original properties, which means any subsequent weight gain can disproportionately affect the facial area, dramatically altering the aesthetic results.
He underscored the need for careful consideration regarding the amount of fat grafted to prevent an overly puffy or artificial appearance. “Patients must rigorously manage their diet after the surgery to sustain the desired aesthetic outcomes,” he cautioned, highlighting the commitment required to maintain the effects of such cosmetic enhancements.
