The Federal Secretary of Interior informed the Sindh High Court, the Chief Justice, about credible intelligence suggesting potential threats from foreign agencies targeting Adiala Jail and other critical infrastructures.
The court addressed a plea for enhanced security for Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, who is currently detained in Adiala Jail. The plea was discussed before a division bench comprised of Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi and Justice Mobin Lakho.
Deputy Attorney General Khaliq Ahmad Butt, who was representing the federal government, clarified that while the federal authorities monitor the situation, security provision is beyond their jurisdiction. He advised the petitioner to approach the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, instead.
Advocate Ghulam Muhaiyuddin, representing petitioner Wahab Baloch, argued concerns about security at Adiala Jail, citing instances where arms were discovered and terrorists were apprehended within the facility. He maintained that it was incumbent upon the federal government to ensure Imran Khan’s safety.
Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi responded to these concerns by mandating enhanced security measures for all inmates, including Imran Khan. He acknowledged the serious nature of the cross-border threats and commended the intelligence agencies for their proactive efforts in forecasting and mitigating such risks. The additional attorney general reinforced that directives had been given to the provincial authorities to implement comprehensive security protocols.
The court concluded by clarifying the legal jurisdiction of the plea, emphasizing that such requests should be directed to the appropriate judicial bodies. It dismissed any notions of judiciary bias, affirming its dedication to impartiality and strict adherence to the law, irrespective of an individual’s political prominence.
The Chief Justice reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to these principles, underscoring the importance of maintaining judicial integrity and the rule of law.
