KARACHI, Sindh: Sindh Police ordered an immediate province-wide crackdown on illegal government number plates displayed on private vehicles, including cars owned by public officials.

An official directive said some government officers had installed official registration plates on personal vehicles, describing the practice as unlawful and a misuse of official privileges.

The Inspector General of Police Sindh directed officers to ensure that government registration plates remain restricted to officially allotted vehicles.

Police field formations across the province must launch a special campaign to identify private vehicles carrying government plates.

The directive said police would act against violators regardless of their rank or official position. Officers will confiscate unauthorised plates and may impound vehicles where necessary. Police may also register criminal cases when the circumstances meet legal requirements.

The circular said that misuse of official number plates undermines transparency and creates difficulties for law-enforcement personnel attempting to verify vehicles and their occupants.

Supervisory officers must personally oversee the implementation of the order. The directive warned that negligence or preferential treatment for violators could result in departmental proceedings. The instructions took effect immediately across Sindh
