Spain’s Messi plan will rely on collective vigilance rather than assigning a single defender to shadow the Argentina captain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed the approach during his pre-match press conference ahead of the final at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.
“We won’t man-mark him, but we’ll be vigilant,” De la Fuente said. He added that Spain and Argentina would both try to control the match through their own playing styles.
Spain intends to preserve their possession-based structure instead of allowing one defender to leave position while tracking Messi across the pitch.
The plan places greater responsibility on Spain’s midfield and defensive units to close passing lanes, maintain spacing and limit Argentina’s ability to supply Messi in dangerous areas.
De la Fuente said individual talent could still decide the final despite both teams’ tactical organisation.

Spain entered the match seeking their second World Cup title after winning the tournament in 2010. Argentina are attempting to defend the crown it secured at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
