Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 in their FIFA World Cup Group C opener at Gillette Stadium near Boston on Saturday, with John McGinn scoring the decisive first-half goal.
McGinn struck in the 28th minute after Ben Gannon-Doak’s ball fell to him in the area. His shot reached the net with a deflection off Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
The win marked Scotland’s first World Cup match after a 28-year absence. It was also their first World Cup victory since a 2-1 win over Sweden in Italy in 1990.
Steve Clarke’s side moved top of Group C after Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1 in New Jersey. Scotland are trying to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
Scott McTominay nearly put Scotland ahead in the 17th minute when his shot from a Ben Gannon-Doak lay-off hit the post. McTominay started after recovering from a stomach bug.
