Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1 in their FIFA World Cup Group C opener at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday after Vinicius Junior scored Brazil’s equaliser.
Ismael Saibari gave Morocco the lead in the 21st minute after running onto a pass from Brahim Diaz and lifting a chipped finish over Alisson Becker.
Vinicius brought Brazil level 11 minutes later. The Real Madrid forward took a pass from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the area, cut onto his right foot and struck into the far corner past Yassine Bounou.
Brazil, chasing a record sixth World Cup title, made an uncertain start under Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian is the first foreign coach to lead Brazil at football’s biggest tournament.
Brazil played without Neymar, who was still recovering from a calf injury. Brazil’s all-time record goalscorer has not played for the national team since 2023.
Morocco, a 2022 World Cup semi-finalist, started brightly under Mohamed Ouahbi. Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi threatened before Saibari opened the scoring.

Brazil pressed after the break as Bounou saved from Igor Thiago, Raphinha and Danilo. Morocco nearly won late, but Alisson stopped El Aynaoui’s long-range effort and blocked Chemsdine Talbi’s follow-up.
Brazil next face Haiti, while Morocco play Scotland in their second Group C match.
