PAF Becomes First to Shot Down Rafale Jet in Combat

Pakistan’s Air Force (PAF) shot down five Indian fighter jets, including three Rafales, in response to India’s midnight airstrikes, marking a historic first for the French-made warplane’s combat loss. The escalation, following the Pahalgam attack, intensifies India-Pakistan tensions.

On May 7, 2025, Pakistan’s Air Force downed five Indian jets, three Rafales, one Su-30mki, and one Mig-29 along with a drone, during India’s airstrikes on six Pakistani locations, including Bahawalpur and Muzaffarabad, ISPR Director-General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry confirmed, per Dawn.

The strikes, condemned as a “blatant act of war,” killed 31 civilians and injured 57, targeting mosques and the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project, per Geo News. Pakistan also destroyed Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC), with all PAF jets safe, Chaudhry stated.

CONFIRMED: One of the three Indian Rafale jets Pakistan claimed to have downed is now confirmed.

CNN cited a French intelligence official confirming one Rafale’s loss, a first for the Dassault Aviation jet, though India and Dassault have not commented. Debris in Indian-administered Kashmir, showing French markings, sparked debate, with experts questioning its authenticity, per Reuters. The Rafale, a 10-ton multirole fighter, was part of India’s 36-jet fleet.

Context of Escalating Conflict

The airstrikes followed India’s unproven claim of Pakistan’s role in the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack, killing 26, per Al Jazeera. India’s “Operation Sindoor” targeted alleged militant sites, escalating tensions with Pakistan’s robust retaliation, per Business Standard. The US, UN, and Iran urged de-escalation, per Bloomberg, amid fears of nuclear conflict. X posts speculated on Rafale losses, amplifying the clash’s global impact.
