The Punjab Traffic Police has announced a groundbreaking initiative to overhaul the province’s driver licensing system. They aim to do this by introducing artificial intelligence-powered vehicles for conducting driving tests. This technological advancement aims to eliminate corruption and ensure complete transparency in the issuance of driving licenses.

According to official details, the traffic police have submitted a summary to the provincial government. It is for the procurement of 32 specialised AI-equipped vehicles. These vehicles will be outfitted with advanced sensors, high-resolution cameras, and sophisticated processing units. This tech can monitor and evaluate driving tests in real time without human intervention.

The project represents a significant financial investment, with the entire fleet expected to cost over Rs. 160 million. The installation of the specialised AI systems alone will account for approximately Rs. 600,000 per vehicle.

Project teams have already started implementation, and two AI vehicles successfully completed pilot testing in Lahore. After finalising the initial phase, the team will expand the project to other major cities throughout Punjab. Authorities expect the AI-powered testing system to reach full operational status by December of this year.

The core objective of this initiative is to create a fully computerised testing process. It leaves no room for manipulation. By removing human discretion from the evaluation process, the system will make it extremely difficult for unqualified candidates to obtain a driving license. This will thereby raise safety standards on Punjab’s roads.

The launch of Punjab’s first Mobile Police Station and Licensing Unit. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, this mobile unit provides citizens with convenient access to a range of police services. These services include FIR registration and the issuance and renewal of various types of driving licenses, including learner, regular, international, and women-specific permits.
