LONDON: Musician Phil Collins nearly died during a 2024 alcohol-related health crisis that left doctors considering life support as his five children gathered at a Swiss hospital.

The 75-year-old former Genesis frontman told The Sunday Times in an interview published on August 2 that heavy drinking damaged his pancreas and kidneys. His organs began shutting down while he was unconscious in intensive care.

“People were coming to say goodbye,” Collins said. He added that he had no memory of his children visiting or the discussions about whether to continue life support.

Collins first entered the hospital in November 2023. Doctors discharged him shortly before Christmas, but he returned to intensive care weeks later and subsequently spent seven months in hospital, according to The Guardian.

The musician said he felt fortunate to survive and had not consumed alcohol since the crisis.

In a January episode of the BBC’s “Eras” podcast, Collins said a live-in nurse provided round-the-clock care and managed his medication.

Five knee operations have left him reliant on crutches, while nerve damage prevents him from playing drums.

Collins last performed with Genesis at London’s O2 Arena in March 2022. His son Nic Collins played drums during the farewell tour while he performed vocals seated.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will induct Collins as a solo performer during its November 14 ceremony in Los Angeles.
