Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Vice Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), strongly criticized Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and called for his immediate resignation. Speaking at a press conference in Multan, the former foreign minister expressed dissatisfaction with the FY24 budget, stating that an additional burden of Rs215 billion in taxes had been imposed on the nation. Qureshi highlighted the already heavy tax burden and criticized the revision of the financial bill.
Qureshi also criticized the government’s performance, particularly in the industrial sector. He claimed that around 40% of textile industries have shut down, while large-scale manufacturing production is also affected. Qureshi contended that the textile and agriculture industries are in a poor state, contributing to the shrinking of the country’s economy. He accused the government of constructing a false narrative and emphasized the need for accountability.
Addressing foreign affairs, Qureshi expressed his dismay over the government’s response to the joint statement issued by the US and India. The statement emphasized Pakistan’s responsibility to take action against extremist groups operating within its borders. Qureshi criticized the officials’ indifference and lack of responsibility in addressing the statement. He further pointed out the absence of any mention of the oppression faced by Kashmiris or the treatment of minorities in India. Qureshi called for greater attention to these issues and urged a more proactive stance.
As a PTI stalwart, Qureshi emphasized the need for a different finance minister, citing the country’s economic condition and the lack of confidence in Ishaq Dar by international entities like the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
