On Thursday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) declared plans for a public demonstration on Sunday aimed at supporting judicial independence and advocating for the release of Imran Khan, designated prisoner number 804, currently held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the party chairman, announced the rally plans, citing directives from PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, during a press briefing following a consultation with him.
Adiala Jail officials permitted a visit by 11 PTI leaders and legal advisors, including notable figures such as Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and others, to meet with Imran Khan.
Barrister Gohar revealed intentions to address a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan on Imran Khan’s behalf, who has voiced strong support for judicial freedom from his jail cell.
This announcement follows a plea by six Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), urging a judicial conference to discuss executive and intelligence interference in judicial processes.
Marwat highlighted a rally in Peshawar at 2 PM on Sunday, inviting participation from all political factions. He emphasized the peaceful nature of the upcoming April 6 assembly in Islamabad’s Parade Ground, which will focus on securing Imran Khan’s release.
Responding to inquiries, Marwat referenced the judges’ letter to the Supreme Court, which outlined the pressures impacting their judicial responsibilities.
PTI leader Latif Khosa criticized the favourable treatment accorded to Nawaz Sharif upon his return from London, contrasting it with the legal challenges faced by Sharif and his relatives. He pointed out letters from prominent Pakistanis addressing the undue pressure on high court judges.
Additionally, Gohar mentioned encountering obstacles while attempting to visit Imran Khan in jail. PTI vehicles were selectively stopped, necessitating a lengthy walk to the facility. He noted their communication with the Jail Superintendent regarding road blockades and the request to carry documents during the visit.
