The Proteas women’s ODI win over Pakistan was built on a commanding all-round display from Sune Luus at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

South Africa secured a 37-run victory in the opening One Day International of the series. Rain reduced the match to 41 overs per side, but the home team adapted quickly and delivered a complete performance.

After Pakistan chose to bowl, South Africa made a steady start through captain Laura Wolvaardt. However, quick wickets left the hosts under pressure.

Luus then steadied the innings. She struck an unbeaten 93 off 76 balls and anchored the middle overs. Later, Sinalo Jafta added momentum with a superb unbeaten 57 off 38 balls in her 50th ODI appearance.

The pair shared a decisive 90-run partnership that lifted South Africa to 260/6. Their late acceleration ensured a competitive total.

In reply, Pakistan rebuilt after early setbacks. A strong partnership between Ayesha Zafar and Sidra Amin put the visitors in contention. At one stage, they looked well placed.

However, once Amin fell, regular wickets followed. Tumi Sekhukhune led the attack with three wickets, while Nadine de Klerk and Luus provided key breakthroughs. Pakistan were eventually bowled out for 223.

At the halfway mark of the first innings, South Africa are 143-3 🏏

Luus completed a memorable performance by taking two wickets with the ball. Her contribution with both bat and ball proved decisive.

Captain Wolvaardt praised the team effort after the match. She highlighted Luus’ early impact and Jafta’s late cameo as key moments in the win.

Having won the previous T20I series 2-1, the Proteas carried momentum into the ODI format. The teams now move to Centurion for the second match, followed by the final ODI in Durban.
