The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has taken a firm stance in response to the soaring electricity bills troubling the citizens. They’ve rallied their party workers to be vocal about the issue and amplify the concerns of the masses. PPP Secretary General Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari urged party workers to stage protests at the city union council and tehsil levels. He emphasized the party’s role in becoming a representative voice against the unjustified hike in electricity tariffs, pointing out the nationwide distress over the hefty bills.

Nationwide Agitation and Accusations

The country has witnessed widespread demands from protesters, who seek a cut in electricity rates and the removal of excess taxes on their bills. They’ve threatened non-payment if their demands aren’t addressed. In this milieu, various cities observed demonstrations by civilians and business communities.

Political factions, notably Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), have also voiced their displeasure over the surge in tariffs and appended taxes. On JI’s 82nd Foundation Day, JI Amir Sirajul Haq announced plans for a peaceful nationwide protest, urging citizens to stand against such injustices.

Interestingly, he attributed the current inflation to the flawed economic policies of previous administrations, including those of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and even the PPP. He criticized the preceding leaderships for their agreements with the IMF, which he believed had detrimental impacts on the common man.
