A reference against former DG ISI Lt Gen (ret) Faiz Hameed for assets beyond means was sent to NAB a few weeks ago, but the bureau did not take action and returned the complaint.

According to senior journalist Ansar Abbasi, the NAB Rawalpindi received a file containing general Faiz’s income tax record and a two-page complaint letter signed by unidentified individuals from Chakwal.

A request was made for an investigation into the former DG ISI, however, after reviewing the file and consulting with higher authorities, DG NAB returned the complaint with the instruction that a formal request be made to the bureau via the relevant authorities.

Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif was also aware that a reference against Lt. General Faiz had been sent to NAB, as well as NAB’s subsequent response. After the appointment of Lt. Gen. (ret.) Nazir Ahmed Butt as the new NAB’s Chairman, the case of the former DG ISI is expected to be returned to NAB for formal processing.

Interior Minister Rana Sana stated on Wednesday that an investigation was being conducted against Lt. General Faiz and that the media would be notified of any developments. The minister of the interior did not specify which government agency was investigating Lt. General Faiz.

He also did not specify the nature of the investigation against the former DG. He however, stated that only the institution has the authority to try General Faiz in court martial. He stated that the GHQ, not the Ministry of the Interior, has the authority to conduct military trials.

Maryam Nawaz, senior vice-president and chief organiser for the PML-N, demanded a court martial for General Faiz in an interview with ‘We News’ on Wednesday. He claimed that General Faiz attempted to destabilise the nation by weakening the PML-N for two years and by supporting the Imran Khan administration for four years.
