Lahore, Punjab: The Punjab government launched a Muharram cyber patrol and blocked more than 5,000 social media pages, accounts and websites carrying hate-related or objectionable content.
Punjab government officials said cyber surveillance teams would monitor social media platforms around the clock before Muharram-ul-Haram.
The Safe City Authority, police and other law enforcement agencies are jointly conducting the online monitoring drive.
Punjab Safe Cities Authority has also introduced a QR Panic Button initiative to improve security at Imambargahs across Punjab during Muharram-ul-Haram.
The authority said the dedicated panic button will be installed at every Imambargah under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s “Safe Punjab” vision.
The system aims to provide immediate assistance in critical situations and support faster emergency response.

Officials said the measure is part of efforts to enhance and modernise security arrangements for Muharram gatherings. Officials said the campaign targets hate speech, provocative posts and content that could hurt religious sentiments or disrupt public order.
Authorities warned that people who upload or share material promoting sectarian tension could face legal action under relevant laws.
Officials also urged social media users to act responsibly and follow legal, ethical and religious-sensitivity guidelines when posting online.
