Dramatic scenes unfolded in Miami Beach during spring break, leading to the arrest of over 250 revellers. The city enforced a midnight curfew over the weekend to curb the excesses, a measure spurred by last year’s disorder, which saw nearly 500 arrests and two fatal shootings.
The curfew, running from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday through Monday was part of the city’s efforts to manage the spring break chaos, reported the NY Post.
From March 1 to March 16, Miami Beach Police confirmed 256 spring break-related arrests, as stated by spokesperson Christopher Bess. Images captured on Friday showcased the festive atmosphere, with crowds partying well into the night.
To enhance security, Governor Ron DeSantis deployed over 140 state troopers to Miami Beach, along with drones and license plate readers, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for criminal activities and disruptions.
The city has also launched a campaign to distance itself from the spring break frenzy, introducing measures like curfews, bag checks, and increased police presence to deter drug use and violence.
Miami Police reported managing the situation effectively, swiftly resolving incidents and maintaining order.
This year marks the third consecutive year of notable spring break unrest in Miami Beach.
Meanwhile, Fort Lauderdale reported around 10 spring break-related arrests for various offences, with police spokesperson Casey Liening noting the situation has been manageable without significant disturbances.
