LOS ANGELES, California: South Los Angeles looting linked to an illegal street takeover left a Superior Grocers ransacked early Sunday, with one suspect arrested and no injuries reported, police said.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said officers responded at about 4:30 a.m. PDT on August 30, near Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street. At least 20 people entered the supermarket after breaking through its entrance.
NBC Los Angeles reported that more than 50 vehicles had blocked the intersection for a street takeover before the burglary.
Three employees inside Superior Grocers called police and then hid on the building’s second floor while the group stole merchandise.
Video from the scene showed food and other goods scattered across the floor, while shelves and alcohol displays had been ransacked.
Police said they had not determined the value of the stolen merchandise. LAPD officers took one person into custody.

Authorities continued investigating the other people involved. The incident followed several other burglaries associated with street takeovers in the Los Angeles area.
ABC7 reported that AutoZone stores in East Los Angeles, Watts and Downey had recently been targeted, while burglars also broke into a pharmacy in Boyle Heights.

Los Angeles County said its multi-agency response includes coordinated enforcement, intersection modifications and efforts to curb online promotion of illegal takeovers.
County data showed takeovers in sheriff-controlled jurisdictions fell 53% in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2024.
