Top-seeded Alexander Zverev survived his second straight five-set match at the US Open, beating Quentin Halys 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The second-round contest lasted four hours and 33 minutes and finished early Friday in New York after Zverev had already endured a near-five-hour opening-round battle against Lorenzo Sonego.
Zverev recovered from 4-1 down in the third set before dominating the tiebreak 7-3. Halys responded by taking the fourth-set tiebreak by the same score to force a deciding set.

“The performance was quite shit to be honest, but I won, that’s the most important thing,” Zverev said in his on-court interview. He noted that the match had stretched into the early morning.

Zverev will next face 25th seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the third round. The German holds a 2-0 career record against Tabilo.
