On April 29, 2025, Meta Platforms announced a new application programming interface (API) for its Llama AI models during its first AI developer conference. The API is aimed at developers and businesses seeking flexible and customizable AI tools.
The Llama API, currently in limited preview with a broader rollout planned in the coming months, aims to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI, Google, and China’s DeepSeek by offering a developer-friendly, mostly free platform.
We’re excited to announce we’ve opened up slots to participate in a limited preview of Llama API – our developer platform for Llama app development. This is just step 1 for our API, and we look forward to hearing the community's feedback on it as we continue to iterate.

“You can now start using Llama with one line of code,” said Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, highlighting the API’s simplicity. Unlike proprietary models, Llama allows users to fully customise and deploy their AI solutions independently, as VP of AI Manohar Paluri noted: “Your model is yours to take wherever you want, not locked on our servers.”
CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasised Meta’s open-source approach, stating it enables developers to combine Llama with other models like DeepSeek for optimal performance.

The launch coincides with Meta’s introduction of a standalone AI assistant app and plans to test a paid AI chatbot subscription in Q2 2025, signalling broader commercial goals. With improved efficiency and lower costs, the Llama API positions Meta as a cost-effective alternative in the AI market, fostering innovation across its digital ecosystem.
