Meta Platforms will not join the European Union’s AI Pact immediately until the EU’s AI Act is fully implemented.
According to a company spokesperson, the EU’s AI Act, agreed upon by lawmakers in May, sets pioneering regulations for artificial intelligence development and use. It requires companies to disclose detailed summaries of the data used to train their AI models.
The European Commission has announced that most provisions of the AI Act will be effective from August 2, 2026. In the interim, companies must adhere to a voluntary AI Pact that aligns with the forthcoming regulations.
The Meta spokesperson stated, “We welcome harmonized EU rules and are concentrating on our compliance efforts under the AI Act.” They also mentioned that Meta might consider joining the AI Pact later.
The AI Act forms a key component of EU legislation, complementing the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, Data Governance Act, and Data Act.
