Lionel Messi surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s record by scoring his 496th goal in Europe’s top five leagues, aiding Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in clinching their successive Ligue 1 title through a 1-1 standoff against Strasbourg.
Messi’s landmark goal, which surpassed Ronaldo’s previous record of 495, became a pivotal contribution to PSG’s triumphant title defense. The veteran Argentine forward, aged 35, initiated the scoring with an assist from his teammate Kylian Mbappe, pushing Ronaldo to the second spot in terms of goals. Even though former PSG forward Kevin Gameiro leveled the score, the tie proved sufficient for PSG to retain their title.
This achievement heralds Messi’s second Ligue 1 title, following his first during his debut season with PSG. However, it is anticipated to be his final French title as he is prepared to exit the club after his contract expiry this summer. Messi will play his final home game against Clermont Foot before he departs from Parc des Princes.

While there has been speculation regarding a possible comeback to Barcelona, the latest reports hint towards Messi considering a high-profile move to Saudi Arabia, where Ronaldo is currently engaged with Al-Nassr. Rival club Al-Hilal is allegedly keen on securing Messi’s services post his contract with PSG concludes next month.
Nonetheless, Barcelona persists in its hope of re-acquiring Messi. Club President Joan Laporta confirmed ongoing negotiations and stressed that Messi views Barcelona as his home. Moreover, he voiced confidence in Barcelona’s ability to challenge other propositions, including those from Saudi Arabia.
Laporta recognized the tension between Messi and PSG’s supporters but did not want to agitate Messi during this period. He maintained that Barcelona, being Messi’s home, can compete with any other potential destination, including Saudi Arabia.
