The Lebanon-Israel peace talks hosted by the United States on Tuesday marked a rare moment of direct high-level engagement between the two countries, with officials describing the meeting as a historic step toward improved relations and a possible broader peace agreement. The talks took place at the State Department and brought together the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors for face-to-face discussions chaired by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Officials said the meeting was the first major direct engagement at a senior level between the two governments since 1993. They described the discussions as constructive and focused on improving bilateral relations while opening channels for continued dialogue.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, both sides called the talks “historic” and said they could lay the groundwork for a broader peace agreement expected to be facilitated by the United States. The statement also highlighted Lebanon’s commitment to fully assert state authority and limit outside influence, including that of Hezbollah.
The United States also reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah attacks and stressed the urgent need to fully implement the ceasefire announced in 2024. That position placed the latest meeting within a wider push to stabilise the border and reduce the risk of renewed conflict.
Marco Rubio Calls Talks a Historic Opportunity
Rubio described the moment as a “historic opportunity,” while acknowledging the long and difficult history of conflict between Lebanon and Israel. He said the effort goes beyond preserving a ceasefire and aims to address decades of instability linked to Hezbollah’s influence.
Rubio also said the meeting had created a framework for future progress. His remarks signalled that Washington sees the talks not as a one-off event, but as the beginning of a larger diplomatic process.

Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter told reporters that the Washington talks showed alignment between Lebanon and Israel on several key issues. He added that both countries share a common goal of achieving peace, a notable public message given the long absence of direct senior-level engagement.

Although the talks did not produce a formal agreement, they set a different tone and suggested that both sides may be willing to test a more sustained diplomatic track under US mediation.
