A Kyiv missile attack killed at least one person and injured more than 20 overnight into Sunday, city officials said.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strikes hit residential buildings, a student dormitory, a car service centre and a shopping mall. He said a 15-year-old boy was among the injured.
Ukraine, whose capital is Kyiv, sits in Eastern Europe. Russia, whose capital is Moscow, also sits across Eastern Europe and northern Asia.
Kyiv military administrator Tymur Tkachenko said the capital was under a “massive ballistic attack.” He urged residents to remain in shelters.
The Ukrainian Air Force warned late Saturday that Russia had launched an Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile. The US State Department also said the US Embassy in Kyiv had received information about a possible missile attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was checking intelligence from US and European partners. He urged world powers to put preventive pressure on Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered retaliation after accusing Ukraine of a deadly drone strike on a dormitory in Russian-occupied Starobilsk. Ukraine denied targeting civilians and said it struck military facilities.
