WASHINGTON: Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation as US Army secretary to President Donald Trump, with the White House confirming on August 31 that he will leave the post.
The White House gave no official reason for his departure. However, CBS News and The Washington Post reported months of friction between Driscoll and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth over the Army’s direction and senior personnel decisions.
A US official told CBS News that Driscoll spoke with Trump about the state of the Army before submitting his resignation.
The reported disagreements included Army modernisation efforts and Hegseth’s removal of senior officers. Hegseth dismissed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George in April, while Gen. Christopher LaNeve has since served as acting chief
The White House praised Driscoll’s record on military readiness, operations and US efforts involving Russia and Ukraine. Spokesperson Anna Kelly said his work had strengthened the Army.
Driscoll had served as the Army’s top civilian official since February 2025. He is an Iraq War veteran and former adviser to Vice President JD Vance.

Fox News reported that, as of Monday evening, Trump had not formally accepted the resignation, although the White House separately confirmed Driscoll was departing. He was expected to leave the Pentagon within days.
