Justin Bieber’s headlining performance during Coachella’s second weekend electrified the crowd, but it also triggered a $20,000 fine for festival organiser Goldenvoice after his set ran past Indio’s strict curfew.
Bieber exceeded the 1:00 a.m. Saturday cutoff by two minutes, adding another penalty to Coachella’s long record of curfew violations. His overrun formed part of more than $40,000 in fines issued against the festival, with Anyma also drawing a penalty after performing nine minutes past the limit the night before.
Indio has enforced curfew rules since Coachella began in 1999. Under the city’s agreement with the festival, Friday and Saturday performances must end by 1:00 a.m., while Sunday shows must finish by midnight.
The penalty structure starts at $20,000 for the first five minutes past curfew and rises further if delays continue beyond that window. Bieber’s brief overrun was enough to trigger the base fine, while Anyma’s longer delay added $24,000 to the total.
This year’s fines continue a pattern that has followed Coachella for years. Paul McCartney famously ran 54 minutes over in 2009, costing Goldenvoice $54,000. More recently, Travis Scott’s three-minute overrun in 2025 resulted in a $20,000 fine, while Lana Del Rey’s 2024 set brought an additional $17,000 penalty.
In 2023, six performers, including Bad Bunny, Frank Ocean, and The Weeknd, collectively generated more than $168,000 in curfew fines, underscoring how difficult it can be for major festival sets to stay within the city’s time restrictions.
Despite the penalties, Coachella closed out both weekends with a run of high-profile performances from artists including Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G, maintaining the star power that has made the desert festival one of the biggest events in live music.
