Islamabad Schools Announce Summer Vacations from June 5 to August 1, 2025

On May 23, 2025, the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) announced that all schools and colleges in Islamabad will observe summer vacations from June 5 to August 1, 2025, in response to anticipated high temperatures. After a two-month break, educational institutions will reopen on August 4, 2025, ensuring students and staff avoid peak summer heat.

To manage the pre-vacation period, the FDE directed single-shift schools to operate from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM starting May 26, 2025, while double-shift schools will hold evening classes to accommodate students. The notification clarified that BS and ADP students will follow their existing schedules, minimising disruptions to higher education programs. This structured approach balances educational continuity with heat-related safety concerns.

Punjab’s Summer Vacation Plans

In a related development, Punjab’s Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that schools across the province will close for summer from May 28 to August 1, 2025, slightly earlier than Islamabad’s schedule. Punjab adjusted school timings to 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM starting May 26 to mitigate heat exposure.

The Secretary of Education initially proposed summer vacations from June 1 to August 9. However, a directive from the minister, reported by The Express Tribune, confirmed an earlier start to the break. Although discussions are ongoing, there has been no official notification regarding potential early school closures due to the rising heat.

Education departments in Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are reviewing summer break schedules, inspired by Punjab’s decision. While no official dates have emerged, provinces prioritise student safety amid rising temperatures, with announcements expected soon. The coordinated approach reflects Pakistan’s efforts to standardise educational calendars while addressing regional climate challenges.

The summer vacations provide relief for students and educators, particularly in Islamabad, where temperatures often exceed 40°C in June. Parents and schools can plan activities and maintenance during the break, while students in BS and ADP programs benefit from uninterrupted studies. The adjusted timings ensure a smooth transition into the vacation period, prioritising health and learning.
