Iranian football player thanked Los Angeles in a handwritten locker-room message after a 0-0 draw with Belgium at SoFi Stadium, keeping their World Cup Group G knockout hopes alive.
Iran’s football federation released the message after Sunday’s match. The note said the team came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honour and left with dignity.
Los Angeles hosted Iran’s first two Group G matches. Iran drew 2-2 with New Zealand in their opener before holding Belgium scoreless at SoFi Stadium.
The team has used Tijuana, Mexico, as its tournament base and crossed into the United States for matches. The arrangement was subject to restrictions on Iran’s stay in the country.
U.S. officials have said the squad’s travel arrangements remain under review. Discussions over easing some restrictions have also continued.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei has repeatedly criticised the travel restrictions. He said his squad faced challenges that no other team had to endure during the tournament.
