Hailie Jade Smith, daughter of Eminem, recently discussed the emotional impact of her father’s music on her “Just a Little Shady” podcast.
Hailie Jade Smith, 28, described the music video for Eminem’s song “Somebody Save Me” as so intense that she watched it only once.
During the episode, Smith reflected on her childhood with her famous father, acknowledging his public battle with addiction. She commended her parents for their upbringing, though she admitted that some of her father’s older songs are challenging for her to listen to because they stir strong emotions.
“I definitely cry every time I hear it,” she mentioned about the song. She also noted that she audibly sobbed during both “Somebody Save Me” and another song “Temporary.”
Smith shared that revisiting the video and songs makes her appreciate how well her parents shielded her from the severity of the issues during her childhood. However, as an adult, she realises what could have been frightening, often bringing her to tears.
Discussing the song’s intent and its significance, Smith expressed empathy for those who have lost addicts or loved ones. She also admitted that she struggles to listen to the song “Mockingbird” without crying and finds it increasingly difficult to listen to any of the songs as she gets older, despite enjoying old family clips shown in the videos.
Eminem’s struggle with addiction is well-documented, with the artist revealing in 2021 that his addiction was so severe at one point that he had to relearn how to rap.
