Cristiano Ronaldo set a Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup record on Tuesday by scoring twice as Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5-0 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K match in Houston.
FIFA said Ronaldo became the first man to score in six FIFA World Cup tournaments after his first-half goal against Uzbekistan. The 41-year-old later added a second goal as Portugal secured their first Group K win.
Nuno Mendes scored from a free-kick between Ronaldo’s two first-half goals, while Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov conceded an own goal. Rafael Leao completed the scoring late in the match.
The win moved Portugal closer to qualification for the knockout stage after their opening 1-1 draw. Ronaldo had faced criticism after that result, with some commentators questioning his place in the starting lineup.
Ronaldo also moved past Eusebio as Portugal’s leading scorer in World Cup history. His brace took him to 10 World Cup goals for Portugal, one more than Eusebio’s tally.
FIFA marked the milestone in a post on X, calling Ronaldo “the first man to score at six FIFA World Cup tournaments.” British broadcaster Piers Morgan also reacted to the record by sharing a quote attributed to Ronaldo: “I don’t chase records, records chase me.”
