Google will use artificial intelligence to enhance the U.S. broadcast of the Paris Olympics, collaborating with NBCUniversal and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee to infuse AI into sports commentary.
The partnership, announced on Thursday, designates Google as Team USA’s official search AI partner. It marks a historic collaboration between a tech company and a sports nonprofit.
The innovative approach aims to modernize Olympic coverage, catering to audiences that prefer digital consumption over traditional live television and appealing to younger viewers accustomed to online clips. NBCUniversal plans to introduce personalized, AI-generated daily recaps narrated by AI versions of renowned personalities like sports commentator Al Michaels.
During the Olympics, NBCUniversal anchors will utilize Google Search’s AI capabilities to provide insights during daytime and primetime broadcasts, explaining topics such as the strategic importance of pool-lane assignments in swimming.
Google’s AI will deliver written responses directly to search inquiries, eliminating the need for users to click through to a website. Additionally, comedian Leslie Jones will engage viewers using Google’s Gemini AI model to quickly learn and commentate on new sports, enhancing the entertainment value of the broadcasts.
