WAZIRABAD, Punjab: The Sohail Afridi attack claim sparked competing accounts on Wednesday after the KP chief minister alleged an armed man targeted him, while police said the individual was an on-duty constable.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said in a video statement that his security team detained a plain-clothes man as his convoy travelled from Sialkot towards Wazirabad and recovered a pistol from him. Afridi alleged the man had been sent to kill him.
Gujranwala Police rejected that allegation, saying the detained person was a police official deployed for the chief minister’s security. Police said the constable showed his identification but was detained and assaulted before the City Wazirabad station house officer intervened.

The police and chief minister therefore remain in direct dispute over the man’s purpose and conduct.
Afridi also alleged that electricity was disconnected and generators damaged at places where he stayed in Sialkot. Those claims have not been independently verified.

The incident came during Afridi’s Punjab mobilisation tour ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) march towards Islamabad on September 27. PTI says the protest will demand the release of party founder Imran Khan.
