On a recent official journey to Turkey, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Asim Munir, met with several high-ranking officials, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This significant visit underscored the mutual interest in fostering deeper diplomatic and military relations between the two nations.

In a press release by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), it was noted that this official trip forms a part of an ongoing series of reciprocal high-level visits aimed at bolstering the historic ties shared between these brotherly nations. The COAS had a series of meetings with notable Turkish dignitaries including the President, foreign and defence ministers, and the heads of the Turkish land and air forces, with an agenda focussed mainly on enhancing defence partnerships and collaborative training initiatives.

General Munir lauded the efforts of the Turkish military in maintaining regional peace and stability and expressed admiration for the operational readiness standards maintained by the Turkish armed forces. Moreover, the Turkish leadership expressed gratitude towards the Pakistan Army engineers for their collaborative efforts alongside NDMA teams during the distressing earthquake that affected Turkiye in February.

Paying Homage and Looking Ahead

During his visit, General Munir also paid his respects at the mausoleum of the revered leader, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, in Ankara. He honoured the late leader by laying a floral wreath, commemorating his significant contributions to the nation.

Later, General Munir visited the headquarters of the Turkish land forces. Upon his arrival, he was accorded a warm reception with a guard of honour to mark the occasion. Emphasizing the resilient bond between Pakistan and Turkiye, the COAS reiterated the Pakistan army’s commitment to further extending support to the Turkish land forces across various sectors.

Reflecting on the unyielding solidarity between the two nations, General Munir affirmed, “Pakistan has consistently stood shoulder to shoulder with their Turkish counterparts during challenging times and moments of victory and will continue to nurture the brotherly relations that bind the two nations together.” This sentiment marks the culmination of a successful visit and paves the way for a future of strengthened alliances and cooperation.
