Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is gearing up to introduce video and audio call functionalities as he endeavours to evolve the platform into a versatile ‘everything app’. This ambitious venture aims to eclipse the competition from Threads, owned by Meta Platforms (META.O).
Musk revealed that the upcoming features, which won’t necessitate a phone number, will be accessible via Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, and personal computers. However, the precise timeline for the rollout remains undisclosed.
Since transforming Twitter into X, Musk has been vocal about his plans to expand the platform into a multi-service hub, encompassing messaging, social networking, and peer-to-peer financial transactions, potentially emulating the multi-faceted approach of China’s popular WeChat app, operated by Tencent (0700.HK).
In addition to ushering in a new CEO last May, Musk remains at the helm of product development at X, spearheading initiatives to alter the presentation of news links on the platform. This move may potentially diminish the influence of news publishers.
