Washington, United States: The Department of Justice opened an E Jean Carroll probe tied to a 2022 deposition in her civil lawsuits against President Donald Trump.
The inquiry focuses on Carroll’s statement that she had no outside financial support for her legal case.
Her lawyers later told the court that a nonprofit backed by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman helped cover legal costs.
Carroll’s legal team said she had no direct contact with the nonprofit when she gave the testimony.

A federal appeals panel reviewed similar claims in 2024 and found no basis to conclude that Carroll lied.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche recused himself because he had served as Trump’s lawyer in Carroll-related appeals.
Andrew Boutros, US attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, now oversees the inquiry from Chicago.
