Google AI Overviews are now automatically expanding for some search queries, displaying fuller AI-generated answers by default and placing traditional organic results further down the page.
Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz told The Verge that AI Overviews may dynamically expand when the company’s systems determine the format is useful for a particular topic.
For affected searches, Google has removed the previous “show more” button. The expanded response also includes an “Ask Anything” box that lets users continue interacting with the AI-generated result.
Google said the automatic expansion is cancelled if a user begins scrolling, preventing the page from changing while the person is already moving through the results.
Google Vice President Robby Stein said on X that the company continues to test and adjust its AI search experiences and will refine them based on user feedback.
The change comes amid ongoing concern among publishers about the amount of search traffic retained within Google’s AI interfaces. Penske Media Corporation filed a lawsuit over the alleged impact of AI Overviews on affiliate revenue.

Google is also continuing to develop AI Mode, including link carousels for developing topics. The company said more than 600,000 sources have been marked as “Preferred Sources,” compared with 345,000 in May.
Google does not currently offer users the option to disable AI Overviews.
