ChatGPT for Teens began rolling out on August 18 with added safety controls, learning tools and optional parental settings for eligible users under 18, OpenAI said.
OpenAI said the experience activates automatically when account information, age verification or its age-prediction system indicates that a user is under 18.
The system adds stronger limits around sensitive or age-inappropriate material. OpenAI said it can reduce exposure to graphic violence, risky challenges and sexual, romantic or violent roleplay.
Parents and guardians can link accounts to manage selected settings. They can also set Quiet Hours, which block access to ChatGPT during a specified time window.

OpenAI said parental controls do not allow parents to read a teenager’s conversations. Safety alerts may be sent in limited situations when serious risks are detected.

The teen experience also includes Study Mode, homework reminders and learning tools such as quizzes. OpenAI said these features aim to guide students through problems rather than simply give answers.
The rollout covers eligible Free and paid personal ChatGPT accounts globally. OpenAI said availability will expand over the coming weeks, with full availability in Australia expected on September 8.
