Ottawa, Canada: Canada World Cup cost estimates have reached C$1.066 billion, or about US$727 million, for 13 matches this summer, the Parliamentary Budget Officer said.
The watchdog put the average public cost at C$82 million per match. It said the figure is broadly in line with past public spending on FIFA World Cup events.
The federal government will cover C$473 million of the total. Meanwhile, provincial and municipal governments will provide the remaining C$593 million.
Meanwhile, Toronto plans to spend C$380 million, including federal grants, to host six matches. British Columbia plans to spend C$578 million to host seven matches in Vancouver.
Canada will host 13 of the 104 matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, the United States and Mexico.
The report said federal support will focus on infrastructure, operations and security. Federal transfers include C$220 million for operations and infrastructure.
Additionally, the federal government plans to spend up to C$145 million on tournament security. Meanwhile, the report said another C$79 million will go to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Canada starts its World Cup campaign against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12. The match will follow the tournament’s opening day.
The Canada World Cup cost remains below some recent host-country averages cited by the Parliamentary Budget Officer. The report listed Brazil 2014 at about US$125 million per game and Russia 2018 at about US$109 million per game.
