Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), voiced his aspiration for Pakistan’s next prime minister to represent a broader demographic, highlighting his preference for a leader outside the traditional stronghold of Lahore, notably associated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
In his conversation with the media in Karachi, Bilawal, the former foreign minister, emphasized the PPP’s intent to contest the upcoming general elections based on its manifesto independently. He underscored the party’s reliance on public support, stating, “We won’t look towards anyone else and will rely on public’s support for success in elections.”
Bilawal expressed confidence in the democratic process, reiterating that the final decision on the prime ministerial candidate rests with the people.
PPP’s Recent Electoral Success and Future Goals
Bilawal pointed to the PPP’s recent triumph in local government by-polls across 14 districts of Sindh as a precursor to the general elections. This victory included significant wins for Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Deputy Mayor Salman Murad, along with Saifullah Noor, indicating strong public backing for the party. Bilawal confidently claimed, “Even if our (political) opponents unite [against us], they won’t be able to defeat the PPP.”
The PPP chairman projected that the party’s success in the local by-polls would be mirrored in the upcoming general elections. He emphasized the necessity of a PPP-led government to implement people-friendly projects. He declared February 8 a day of victory for the legacies of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.
Last week, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), following the Supreme Court’s directive, confirmed that the general elections would be held on February 8, 2024, thereby resolving the ambiguity surrounding the polls. This decision was taken in consultation with President Arif Alvi and aligns with the Supreme Court’s order for timely elections.
Addressing the use of US-made weapons in the recent terrorist attack on the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) base in Mianwali, Bilawal described it as unfortunate and highlighted the need for effective counter-terrorism measures. He reiterated the PPP’s commitment to combating extremism and implementing the National Action Plan effectively.
In his remarks about the May 9 riots, Bilawal called for the release of individuals not involved in the attacks on Jinnah House and military installations while maintaining that those responsible should not be forgiven. He advocated for a balanced approach to justice after these events.
