President Joe Biden, aged 81, has tested positive for COVID-19, as confirmed by the White House on Wednesday.
Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, reported the president’s condition after he had to cancel a speaking event with UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights organization. She noted that President Biden is vaccinated and boosted and is only experiencing mild symptoms.
Upon leaving Las Vegas for Delaware to recuperate, Biden, appearing cautious but in good spirits, told reporters, “Good, I feel good,” as he carefully ascended the steps of Air Force One.
This development occurs during a critical phase for Biden, who is trailing in key battleground states. Meanwhile, his political rival, Donald Trump, is gaining attention at a convention following an assassination attempt on him.
Jean-Pierre also mentioned that Biden plans to spend the weekend at his beach house in Delaware, though it remains uncertain how long he will be off the campaign trail. Shortly after the announcement, Biden’s motorcade departed for Las Vegas airport following a radio interview.
The news of Biden’s COVID diagnosis was met with disappointment during his planned speech at the UnidosUS event. Janet Murguia, the organizer, conveyed Biden’s optimistic message to the audience, stating he reassured them of his quick return to public engagements.
Despite internal pressures within his party regarding age and reelection bid, Biden remains resolute. He has vocally dismissed suggestions of withdrawing from the race, affirming that only significant health issues would reconsider his candidacy.
Recently, Representative Adam Schiff suggested it was time for Biden to consider passing on leadership, a sentiment echoed by some voters in recent polls who expressed concerns about Biden’s age.
The White House assured that despite the diagnosis, Biden would continue his presidential duties while isolating and following CDC guidelines. He has begun treatment with Paxlovid, and his doctor reported earlier symptoms of an upper respiratory infection.
