US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have issued a joint call to Pakistan, urging it to ensure its territory is not being utilized for initiating terror attacks.
Following a meeting during Modi’s visit to the United States, in a statement, both leaders urged action against extremist groups allegedly residing in Pakistan, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, which have been implicated in several terror activities.
The statement forcefully condemned cross-border terrorism and the exploitation of terrorist proxies, demanding immediate action from Pakistan.
Biden and Modi further emphasized the need for a collective response against all terrorist groups listed by the United Nations, including Al-Qa’ida, Daesh, and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. The leaders stressed the necessity of bringing to justice the instigators of significant attacks, such as the 2008 Mumbai massacre and the Pathankot incident, which have left a lasting impact on the victims and strained international relations.
Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan and Myanmar
In their discussion about Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, Biden and Modi agreed on the essential need to provide immediate assistance to the Afghan people without interruption. The leaders underlined their support for a peaceful, secure, and stable Afghanistan.
US President Biden and Indian Prime Minister Modi also urged the Taliban to comply with UNSC Resolution 2593, which insists that Afghan territory should never be utilized to threaten or launch attacks on any country, provide shelter to terrorists, or fund terrorist activities.
Simultaneously, the leaders emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive political structure and urged the Taliban to respect the human rights of all Afghans, particularly women and girls.
Expressing their mutual concern about the worsening situation in Myanmar, where a fledgling civilian government was overthrown by the military in 2021, Biden and Modi called for the release of all arbitrarily detained individuals, constructive dialogue, and the country’s transition toward an inclusive federal democratic system.
Lastly, President Biden commended Prime Minister Modi’s significant participation in the G7 Hiroshima Summit and expressed his anticipation for the upcoming G20 Summit, to be held in New Delhi in September. Biden applauded India’s ongoing leadership in its G20 President.
