A Bermuda cruise rerouted to Canada left passengers stunned after Virgin Voyages changed the Valiant Lady’s itinerary from Bermuda to Saint John, New Brunswick, because of unsafe weather conditions. The shift turned what many travellers expected to be a warm-weather escape into a cold and windy stop in Atlantic Canada.
Passengers were notified by email on April 3, just three days before departure from New York on April 6. Instead of sailing south to Bermuda, the ship headed north and reached Saint John on April 8 before returning to New York on April 11.
The unusual itinerary change drew widespread attention after India Jade McCue and her husband, Ian, posted a TikTok video reacting to a Virgin Voyages email. In the now-viral clip, the couple dramatically read the line advising passengers to bring “a few extra layers,” highlighting the stark contrast between Bermuda and New Brunswick in April.
India said the family had planned the trip for months and could not easily cancel because they had already confirmed flights, hotels, and schedules. She said their emotional response felt like moving through “the stages of grief” before they decided to make the most of the trip.
Virgin Voyages said sailing to Bermuda would have exposed passengers and crew to genuinely unsafe conditions. The company said it reviewed forecast conditions along the planned route and, before departure, made the decision to protect safety.
Under its terms, the cruise line can change or substitute itineraries because of weather without prior notice. It offered passengers who cancelled a full booking a credit for a future voyage, while those who continued with the trip received $100 in onboard credit along with enhanced offers for future sailings
Around 2,000 passengers arrived in Saint John well before the city’s normal cruise season begins in late June. Local officials and businesses had to respond quickly, and passengers found cold weather, some snow on the ground, and tourism services that were not fully ready for early April visitors.
Even so, travellers said local people were welcoming and kind. The disappointment, they stressed, was not with Saint John itself, but with the reality that a tropical beach holiday had turned into a chilly Bay of Fundy detour.
