Belgium and Egypt drew 1-1 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G opener at Lumen Field in Seattle on Monday, denying Egypt a first World Cup win.
Emam Ashour put Egypt ahead in the 20th minute after Mohamed Salah set him up on his 34th birthday, according to match summaries. Ashour’s strike gave Egypt a 1-0 half-time lead.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia sent on Romelu Lukaku in the 66th minute. Seconds later, Lukaku attacked a Thomas Meunier cross and pressured Mohamed Hany into an own goal.
Kevin De Bruyne went close for Belgium after the break when his free-kick hit the outside of the post. Salah also tested Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois before leaving the pitch in the final 15 minutes.
The result extended Egypt’s wait for a first win at the World Cup. The seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions are making their fourth appearance at the tournament.

Belgium and Egypt each took one point from the Group G opener. Egypt next face Iran and New Zealand in their remaining group fixtures.
