Australian cattle producer Colin Deveraux experienced a near-fatal encounter with a crocodile, a situation he survived by employing an unexpected defence tactic. This incident occurred while Deveraux was on his way to the Finniss River for fencing work, a routine part of his job that unexpectedly turned into a struggle for survival.

Upon stopping by a lake near his destination, Deveraux noticed unusual activity among the fish, prompting him to investigate closer to the water’s edge. Suddenly, a crocodile attacked, clamping down on his right foot and violently shaking him.

The force of the attack dragged Deveraux into the water, putting him in a life-threatening position. During an interview with ABC News, he recounted how he inadvertently bit the crocodile’s eyelid, describing it as thick, like leather. This reflex action caused the crocodile to release its grip, allowing Deveraux to leap away and run towards his car. The crocodile gave chase for a brief distance before stopping.

Medical Emergency and Treatment

Despite managing to escape the crocodile, Deveraux sustained a serious wound on his right leg from the bite. Realizing the severity of his injury, he quickly created a tourniquet using a towel and rope to control the bleeding. His brother drove him approximately 80 miles to the Royal Darwin Hospital for urgent medical attention. Reflecting on the attack, Deveraux acknowledged the need for changes in his routine, admitting that he had become too accustomed to working in swampy areas known for crocodile habitation.

At the Royal Darwin Hospital, Deveraux’s leg required intensive care, particularly due to the risk of infection from the crocodile-infested murky waters. The medical team focused on diligently flushing the wound for over ten days to prevent complications. This careful and prolonged treatment was crucial in ensuring the infection did not worsen, aiding his recovery process.

In summary, Colin Deveraux’s encounter with the crocodile was a startling reminder of the dangers present in natural habitats and the importance of remaining vigilant. His quick thinking and subsequent medical care were pivotal in his survival and recovery from this unexpected wildlife attack.
